Text Queries

You have the option to search documents three ways:

  1. Queries against the whole document text. See below for instructions.
  2. Queries against certain attributes, e.g., filing date. See here for instructions.
  3. Search clause or definition. See here for instructions.

🟪 Finding Errors 🟪

Here are some tips on finding errors.

JSON POST

You run queries by sending them as a JSON POST like this. The authorization token is a URL parameter. The parameters are a JSON body.

curl -X POST
'https://www.lawinsider.com/api/v1alpha/search?token=(token)
-H 'Content-Type: application/json'
-d '{
   "query": {
      "q": "",
       "_index": "contract"
    }
}'

Text query

The basic format is to put the text filter after the q attribute below the query attribute:

 {
"query": {
    "q": filter
    }
}

See below for the list of text query operators

Index Query

You can select by index. The indices are:

  • contract
  • definition
  • company
  • country
  • category
  • clause
  • jurisdiction
{
"query": {
    "q": "employee",
    "_index": "contract"
    }
}

Index Query Sample Response and Metadata

Here you can see it matched documents with the word employee whose index is contract.

Page Number

Restrict search to a specific page.

curl -X POST
  '<https://www.lawinsider.com/api/v1alpha/search?token=><token>'
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json'
  -d '{
    "query": {
      "q": "agree",
      "_index": "clause",
      "p": 2
    }
  }'

Text Query Operators

Here is a list of supported operators:

OperatorFunction
+Must include as well as and logical operator. You can also think of this as adding a second filter. For example, this would match documents that include both employee and agreement "q": "+ employee + agreement".
-Exclude, meaning omit documents that contain this word or phrase.
~2Fuzzy, handles spelling mistakes and other variations in spelling. See below for an example.
*Wildcard. Means a word followed by any number of wildcard characters.
()Query filter delimiter. Use to delimit text queries, such as this or statement (a | b).
""Exact Phrase. Delimit like this "\"THIS OPERATING AGREEMENT\"". Otherwise fuzzy logic, etc., would kick in.
\escape. That means don't process the next word or character as a statement but rather as text .

Escape

For example, + means look for a plus and not use the + logical operator.

Fuzzy

Fuzzy handles variations in spelling including misspelling or similar terms.

The tilde (~) operator is used to perform fuzzy searches. A fuzzy search allows for approximate matching of terms, which can be helpful when you want to find documents that contain terms similar to the one you're searching for, but with slight variations like typos, misspellings, or phonetic similarities.

There is an optional parameter max_edit_distance that specifies the maximum number of edits (insertions, deletions, or substitutions) required to match the term. The default value is usually 2.

Here is an example. We spell agreement wrong. In actual practice your would probably put the correct spelling and then have the computer find misspelled variations.

curl -X POST "https://www.lawinsider.com/api/v1alpha/search?token="${token}"&pretty" -H 'Content-Type: application/json' -d '{
   "query": {
      "q": "agrmnt~"
    }
}'

You can see at the end of the results what logic it used:

"queryTokens": [
    "agrmnt~"
  ],

Max Edit Distance

This example does not match because it takes 3 additions to correct the spelling. Here we told it the maximum allowed is 4:

curl -X POST "https://www.lawinsider.com/api/v1alpha/search?token="${token}"&pretty" -H 'Content-Type: application/json' -d '{
   "query": {
      "q": "agrmnt~4"
    }
}'

SLOP aka Proximity Text Queries

SLOP (Slop distance) or Proximity Text Queries lets you designate how many positions terms in a search query can be apart and still considered a match. This is particularly useful for capturing phrases where the terms might appear in a different order or with some extra words in between.

For example, with a slop distance of 1, the query quick brown fox could match a document containing the quick, agile brown fox. The word agile is within a slop distance of 1 from the word quick.

SLOP words use phrases. Thus the phrase must be delimited by escaped quote marks like in this example below or parentheses ().

This matches:

  • breech of contract
  • breech of this contract
  • contract or the breech
